Next Package of Changes to Handicap System

THE LATEST PACKAGE OF CHANGES TO THE HANDICAP SYSTEM INCLUDES:

1. Each club must establish a handicap committee (this is currently being done)

2. All 4 ball stroke, par and stableford rounds must be handicapped (each player, regardless of score)

3. All team stroke, par and stableford events where each player plays only their own ball, as it lies,.must be handicapped

4. Use of 9 hole cards for handicap purposes.

5. Use of non competition cards for handicap purposes.

These changes do not mean everyone will have to hole out in fourballs and teams events. Where you do not hole out a “most likely” score will be used. This will be explained fully prior to implementation.

TIMELINE

Clubs are able to establish their own timeline for implementation of these changes. The changes do not have to be implemented at the one time. However all changes must be implemented by December 31st 2010.

Members will be advised of the timing of the changes at Benalla Golf Club through notices on tables, noticeboards and our web site.

Warning Siren Installed

A warning siren has been installed to alert players to any suspension of play.  The most common cause of suspension of play will be when lightning poses a threat to player safety.

A Local Rule has been adopted to allow the committee/golf shop staff to order an immediate suspension of play:

When play is suspended by the Committee for a dangerous situation:

  •  if the players in a match or group are between the play of two holes, they must not resume play until the Committee has ordered a resumption of play.
  • if they are in the process of playing a hole, they must mark their ball and discontinue play immediately and not resume play until the Committee has ordered a resumption of play.  If a player fails to discontinue play immediately, he/she is disqualified unless circumstances warrant waiving the penalty as provided in Rule 33-7

Under the rules of golf players also have the right to discontinue play if they think lightning is threatening them, even if the committee has not authorized it specifically by signal.  (Rules 6.8 and 33.2d.)

The following signals will be used:

Discontinue Play immediately -        One prolonged note of siren.

Discontinue Play -                                Three consecutive notes of siren, repeated.

Resume Play -                                       Two Short notes of siren, repeated.

Thanks to Alan Hair  for installing the siren.
